Usually, you will want to apply to at least 2 safeties, 4 targets, and 2 reaches. A safety school is a school that you are likely to get into.
What should my target colleges be?
For most students, I recommend applying to about 1/3 target schools, 1/3 reach schools, and 1/3 safety schools. Generally, I think applying to 6-12 colleges is good to give yourself options without going overboard. Therefore, applying to about 2-5 target colleges is a reasonable number.

A safety school is a college that you’re almost guaranteed to get into.
