How to Apply for Need-Based Financial Aid
- You will need an FSA ID, which you can get at fsaid.ed.gov, to electronically sign the FAFSA.
- Then, file the FAFSA online at fafsa.ed.gov.
- The FAFSA is a free form. You do not need to pay anybody to file the FAFSA.

Is financial aid free?
Gift aid is free money. It includes grants and scholarships. Grants are typically awarded based on financial need, while scholarships are awarded based on merit.

How many credits do you need to take to qualify for financial aid?
Generally, students need to be enrolled in a minimum of 6-credit hours to be eligible for financial aid. But, to be eligible for the full financial aid amount, students usually need to be enrolled in 12-credit hours, or be considered a full-time student.
How long does CUNY financial aid take?
The office of Federal Student Aid at the U.S. Department of Education will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR), which is a summary of the FAFSA data you submitted. You’ll get your SAR within three days to three weeks after you submit your FAFSA.
How do I ask for more financial aid letter?
Your financial aid award appeal letter should include the following:
- An address to a specific person.
- A clear “ask” and a specific “why.” Ask the office to reconsider, then offer a clear-cut reason why you need more aid money.
- Details of any special circumstances.
- Appropriate documentation.

Who qualifies for fafsa?
Our general eligibility requirements include that you have financial need, are a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, and are enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate program at your college or career school. Can a college student apply for financial aid without parents?
You may not be required to provide parental information on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form. If you answer NO to ALL of these questions, then you may be considered a dependent student and may be required to provide your parents’ financial information when completing the FAFSA form.
What is the maximum income to qualify for financial aid 2020?
Currently, the FAFSA protects dependent student income up to $6,660. For parents, the allowance depends on the number of people in the household and the number of students in college. For 2019-2020, the income protection allowance for a married couple with two children in college is $25,400.
How much financial aid can I get per semester?
For the 2019–20 academic year, individual students can receive a maximum of $6,195. Pell Grants are disbursed per semester if your school uses the semester system. For example, if you receive $2,000 total in Pell Grants for the year, you will get $1,000 per semester.
How many years do you get financial aid?
Please note that you can receive the Federal Pell Grant for no more than 12 terms or the equivalent ( roughly six years ). You’ll receive a notice if you’re getting close to your limit. If you have any questions, contact your financial aid office.
