Does fafsa submit to colleges automatically?
The information you report on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is sent to each school you list. You don’t need to apply for admission to a school before you list it on your FAFSA form; your school list can include all the schools to which you have applied or might apply.
How do I send my financial aid documents to colleges?
You can submit the financial aid documents to colleges using one of these three methods: by email, financial aid portal, or IDOC.
- Email the financial aid documents to the college’s financial aid office.
- Upload financial aid documents in the financial aid portal.

Three to five days if you completed your forms online and provided an email address. Seven to 10 days if you submitted your forms online but didn’t provide an email address. Three weeks if you file a paper FAFSA.
Is FAFSA first come first serve?
You should fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible after it opens — even if you don’t think you qualify for aid — as some aid is first come, first served. The FAFSA application is open for about 20 months, and you can receive money for a school year retroactively.
Do you have to pay FAFSA back?
FAFSA is not the financial aid itself, so you do not have to pay it back. Federal student aid that is awarded based on the FAFSA includes the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Work-Study and federal student loans. The FAFSA is also used to award state grants and institutional grants from colleges and universities.
Can I apply for FAFSA before applying to a college?
It is possible to file your FAFSA before applying for admission to a college, but the schools will generally not package an award offer for you until you have been admitted to their school. So the FAFSA information will be sent to the colleges but you will not receive an award offer until you are admitted.
Can colleges see your FAFSA list?
Upon receipt of your complete financial aid application, those colleges’ financial aid offices will determine your eligibility for any applicable federal, state, and institutional aid programs. Colleges today have no ability to see other colleges listed on your FAFSA, nor the order in which they are listed.
Who qualifies for FAFSA?
Our general eligibility requirements include that you have financial need, are a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, and are enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate program at your college or career school. There are more eligibility requirements you must meet to qualify for federal student aid.
Can you get denied FAFSA?
Can you be denied a federal student loan? Yes, you can be denied a federal student loan for many reasons. It’s a common misconception that completing a FAFSA loan application means you’ll automatically get approved for federal student loans. In reality, not everyone is eligible.
Can you use FAFSA money to buy a car?
You cannot use student loans to buy a car. You also can’t pay for the purchase of a car with financial aid funds. In particular, a qualified education loan is used solely to pay for qualified higher education expenses, which are limited to the cost of attendance as determined by the college or university.
Does FAFSA send you a check?
Financial aid money is awarded by the school to students who qualify, but your school will likely apply your tuition and associated fees to the financial aid amount you have. This means that you will not receive a check for the total amount of your financial aid.
